NCAA Mens Top 25 – Preseason
December 10, 2008 by #1 Sportsfan · Leave a Comment
This looks to be a great season in mens college basketball and to no suprise North Carolina is the early favorite. Davidson breaks the Top 25 at the beginning of the season for the first time since I can remember. I know its Stephen Curry’s first time in the top 25 preseason.

CC Sabathia…the Yankee
December 10, 2008 by #1 Sportsfan · Leave a Comment
To this point I couldn’t tell you where the largest prize on the free agent market was going to be heading for next season. I was almost sure that it was not to the New York Yankees because CC himself has come out saying he did not want to live in the city. Several credible sources are saying that is the case now just like in the case of Mike Mussina before. This time they didn’t have Joe Torre on the phone telling him how he doesn’t have to actually live in the city, just in the suburbs and what not. Is this a good move for the Yankees to lock up this work horse of a pitcher? He carried the Brewers into the playoffs this year and them dropped them off at the ball park. He has not proven to me yet whether or not he can make it in the post season. For his career, CC Sabathia is 117-73 with a 3.66 ERA in 254 games. He has however completed 26 full games and he has 10 complete shutouts in his career with 1,393 strikeouts.
2008-2009 BCS Bowl Predictions
December 7, 2008 by #1 Sportsfan · 2 Comments
I thought I would give my shot at predicting an early outcome of the BCS Bowl games. Now understand that this is not permanent nor true, just how I figure things will turn out (all times are Central Standard Time) and just so you know the team I think will win are in Bold:
Thursday January 1rst, 2009
Rose Bowl 3:30PM ABC (HD)
Penn State vs. USC
Orange Bowl 7:00PM FOX (HD)
Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati
Friday, January 2nd
Sugar Bowl 7:00PM FOX (HD)
Alabama vs. Utah
Monday, January 5th
Fiesta Bowl FOX (HD)
Texas vs. Ohio State
Thursday January 8th
BCS Championship Game FOX (HD)
Oklahoma Sooners 47
Florida Gators 22
So I bet you are asking where this is going to leave Texas Tech…This will more than likely leave them with the January 2nd game of the Cotton Bowl versus Ole Miss possibly?
Why you shouldnt believe the AP Poll
December 7, 2008 by #1 Sportsfan · Leave a Comment
I was browsing the Internet today and I was trying to figure out how many weeks Texas was ranked #1 this season and I stumbled upon the Preseason Top 25 that the AP swore would hold true because of their experts…boy I don’t think they could have been more wrong at this point. To explain my list the rankings are the actual rankings the AP set at the beginning of the season. The numbers in parenthesis are their actual rank as of the end of regular season. The teams in bold are teams which are not eligible for any bowl games (aka they have a sub .500 record).
1. Georgia (19)
2. Ohio State (10)
3. USC (5)
4. Oklahoma (2)
5. Florida (4)
6. Missouri (20)
7. LSU (NR)
8. West Virginia (NR)
9. Clemson (NR)
10. Auburn (NR)
11. Texas (3)
12. Texas Tech (7)
13. Wisconsin (NR)
14. Kansas (NR)
15. Arizona State (NR)
16. Brigham Young (18)
17. Virginia Tech (25)
18. Tennessee (NR)
19. South Florida (NR)
20. Illinois (NR)
21. Oregon (19)
22. Penn State (8)
23. Wake Forest (NR)
24. Alabama (1)
25. Pittsburgh (23)
Percy Harvin Not Playing in SEC Championship
December 6, 2008 by #1 Sportsfan · Leave a Comment
The leading reciever and second leading rusher for the Florida Gators will not be playing today in the SEC championship against Alabama. What does this mean for Florida? Well at the begninning of the season, there was a lot of talk about two possible Heisman candidates from Florida in Tim Tebow (who won it last season as the first sophomore in history) and Harvin. Harvin has averaged almost 9 yards per carry and 17 yards per reception. I still think that Florida stands a good chance of winning this afternoon. I am actually going to take Alabama in the upset (according to Vegas odds) 38-24. Look for Tebow to throw quite a bit in this game. I think he takes himself out of the Heisman watch (not that I think he deserves to be there in the first place).
Plaxico Burress placed on Non-Injured Reserve List
December 4, 2008 by #1 Sportsfan · Leave a Comment
The New York Football Giants have suspended Plaxico Burress after he shot himself in the leg at a local night club. The Superbowl star has had a lot of problems with his life lately. The public and media have not been nice to him since he skipped a couple of team meetings. To give you an idea of what I am talking about I will give you a timeline and you can see whether or not you believe he should be suspended and removed from the Giants (because essentially thats what they did when they put him on the Non-Injured reserve list), and by the way, he is also looking at 3 1/2 to 15 years in prison for his little stunt and not having a permit for his weapon. I think the worst part about his situation is the fact that the Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg came out and told the public he wanted Plaxico Burress prosecuted to the fullest extent. I feel bad I guess…because the dude is a good guy for the most part. He has some issues he needs to work out and I think his ego has gotten the better of him. What I am confused about is he is only suspended for 4 games which is the “rest of the season” but what about the playoffs…the Giants will clinch a spot with a win this weekend. Who knows…but something tells me that you have seen the last of Burress in a Giants uniform. I think he is a talented enough guy to get one a team somewhere else, but he wont be in New York more than likely.
Beauty Contest Series (BCS) SUCKS!@
December 2, 2008 by #1 Sportsfan · 4 Comments
Over the past few weeks, people have been complaining about the BCS polls and there is a real lack of understanding as to why the BCS sucks so much. Let me clue you in on a few details of this years situation.
- No more than two teams from any conference can play in BCS Bowl games (unless two are in the national championship) and if a team is ranked in the top 4 they are guarenteed a spot in a BCS bowl game. Here is the problem in the Big 12 right now: Texas will end up ranked in the top 4 which means they are guarenteed a spot in a BCS bowl game (more than likely the Fiesta Bowl), Oklahoma will more than likely be in the national championship (with a win over Missouri this weekend), and Texas Tech, the number 7 ranked team in the nation, is left holding the clipboard with me on the sideline. They will more than likely play Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl or someone else in the Holiday Bowl. Sorry Red Raider fans, you are having the best season in school history and Graham Harrell, Michael Crabtree, and quite possibly Mike Leach will all be gone next year and this was your one shot at glory and you are going to end up in a toilet bowl (although the Cotton Bowl would be a great accomplishment for your school). I guess you guys should get some fans that are willing to travel and stop playing those 1-AA schools in your non-conference regular season schedule.
- This next point isn’t necessarily all the BCS and much more just the Big 12 in general. Texas is going to end up watching the Big 12 championship game on TV at home featuring two teams they beat down on in Oklahoma and Missouri. Its sad, but very true and you can be sure that this rule will be changed by next season. You will never see this problem again. Too bad Texas got screwed.
- Boise State (12-0) vs. Ohio State (10-2) who do you go with? Most would say Ohio State because of the fans, but can you really tell me that you expect Ohio State to do better than Boise in a bowl game? Boise State beat Oregon on the road at the beginning of the season and have not lost since. I hate to say it but I think Boise is going to have to sit this one out as much as I would love to see them against Utah or USC or something.
The BCS Standings Looking like this (Top 10)
