I thought I would give my shot at predicting an early outcome of the BCS Bowl games. Now understand that this is not permanent nor true, just how I figure things will turn out (all times are Central Standard Time) and just so you know the team I think will win are in Bold:

Thursday January 1rst, 2009

Rose Bowl 3:30PM ABC (HD)
Penn State vs. USC

Orange Bowl 7:00PM FOX (HD)
Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati

Friday, January 2nd

Sugar Bowl 7:00PM FOX (HD)
Alabama vs. Utah

Monday, January 5th

Fiesta Bowl FOX (HD)
Texas vs. Ohio State

Thursday January 8th

BCS Championship Game FOX (HD)
Oklahoma Sooners 47
Florida Gators 22

So I bet you are asking where this is going to leave Texas Tech…This will more than likely leave them with the January 2nd game of the Cotton Bowl versus Ole Miss possibly?

I was browsing the Internet today and I was trying to figure out how many weeks Texas was ranked #1 this season and I stumbled upon the Preseason Top 25 that the AP swore would hold true because of their experts…boy I don’t think they could have been more wrong at this point. To explain my list the rankings are the actual rankings the AP set at the beginning of the season. The numbers in parenthesis are their actual rank as of the end of regular season. The teams in bold are teams which are not eligible for any bowl games (aka they have a sub .500 record).

Over the past few weeks, people have been complaining about the BCS polls and there is a real lack of understanding as to why the BCS sucks so much. Let me clue you in on a few details of this years situation.

No more than two teams from any conference can play in BCS Bowl games (unless two are in the national championship) and if a team is ranked in the top 4 they are guarenteed a spot in a BCS bowl game. Here is the problem in the Big 12 right now: Texas will end up ranked in the top 4 which means they are guarenteed a spot in a BCS bowl game (more than likely the Fiesta Bowl), Oklahoma will more than likely be in the national championship (with a win over Missouri this weekend), and Texas Tech, the number 7 ranked team in the nation, is left holding the clipboard with me on the sideline. They will more than likely play Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl or someone else in the Holiday Bowl. Sorry Red Raider fans, you are having the best season in school history and Graham Harrell, Michael Crabtree, and quite possibly Mike Leach will all be gone next year and this was your one shot at glory and you are going to end up in a toilet bowl (although the Cotton Bowl would be a great accomplishment for your school). I guess you guys should get some fans that are willing to travel and stop playing those 1-AA schools in your non-conference regular season schedule.

This next point isn’t necessarily all the BCS and much more just the Big 12 in general. Texas is going to end up watching the Big 12 championship game on TV at home featuring two teams they beat down on in Oklahoma and Missouri. Its sad, but very true and you can be sure that this rule will be changed by next season. You will never see this problem again. Too bad Texas got screwed.

Boise State (12-0) vs. Ohio State (10-2) who do you go with? Most would say Ohio State because of the fans, but can you really tell me that you expect Ohio State to do better than Boise in a bowl game? Boise State beat Oregon on the road at the beginning of the season and have not lost since. I hate to say it but I think Boise is going to have to sit this one out as much as I would love to see them against Utah or USC or something.

The BCS Standings Looking like this (Top 10)

Alabama

Oklahoma

Texas

Florida

USC

Utah

Texas Tech

Penn State

Boise State

Ohio State

Now thats the official standings. Its made up of the Harris Poll, Coaches Poll, and Computer Rankings. Now, look how jacked up the three different polls are.

Harris Poll Rankings

Alabama

Florida

Texas

Oklahoma

USC

Penn State

Utah

Texas Tech

Boise State

Ohio State

Coaches Poll

Alabama

Oklahoma

Texas

Florida

USC

Penn State

Utah

Texas Tech

Boise State

Ohio State

Now this is where it gets kind of scary lol Computer Rankings:

Oklahoma

Texas

Alabama

Texas Tech

Utah

Florida

Boise State

USC

Penn State

TCU

Over the past few years there has been a lot of concern for the rankings of college football to be determined by a computer system. Personally I am all for it and all for exploiting the computer world, but I too, have had problems in the past with its decisions. The two incidences that I am referring to are the 2003 season when USC was ranked #1 in both polls but when the final BCS Standings came out, they were ranked 3rd and out of the championship. Personally since then I have felt that USC has gotten a lot of votes when they should not have. After they won their bowl game they were forced to share the #1 status with LSU which created a lot of controversy. In 2006 Boise State was denied a spot in the championship game after going undefeated the entire season and ended up having to play in the Fiesta Bowl and beat Oklahoma in overtime 43-42 (my favorite bowl game of the year). To me, I dont think you should even be given a chance in the case of Boise State unless they are willing to play heavy hitting teams throughout the season. There is no chance they make it in this year because of the schedules the Big 12, SEC, and Big 10. Even though the BCS has had its controversial subjects, its still better than the alternative which would be biased votes from across the country like the AP Poll which this season I have had a lot of problems with. I am just glad that Texas is at the top where they should be at this point. A lot of Alabama fans are pissed they are not #1 and all I have to say about that is look at what has happened the past couple of seasons with the #1 spot. They seem to lose all the time so I wouldn’t worry too much about it because you guys don’t have much of a schedule left. Anyways, without further blabbing, here is the first BCS Standings of the 2008 season:

1. Texas 7-0
2. Alabama 7-0
3. Penn State 8-0
