Percy Harvin Not Playing in SEC Championship

December 6, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

The leading reciever and second leading rusher for the Florida Gators will not be playing today in the SEC championship against Alabama.  What does this mean for Florida?  Well at the begninning of the season, there was a lot of talk about two possible Heisman candidates from Florida in Tim Tebow (who won it last season as the first sophomore in history) and Harvin.  Harvin has averaged almost 9 yards per carry and 17 yards per reception.  I still think that Florida stands a good chance of winning this afternoon.  I am actually going to take Alabama in the upset (according to Vegas odds) 38-24.  Look for Tebow to throw quite a bit in this game.  I think he takes himself out of the Heisman watch (not that I think he deserves to be there in the first place).

Beauty Contest Series (BCS) SUCKS!@

Over the past few weeks, people have been complaining about the BCS polls and there is a real lack of understanding as to why the BCS sucks so much.  Let me clue  you in on a few details of this years situation.

  • No more than two teams from any conference can play in BCS Bowl games (unless two are in the national championship) and if a team is ranked in the top 4 they are guarenteed a spot in a BCS bowl game.  Here is the problem in the Big 12 right now:  Texas will end up ranked in the top 4 which means they are guarenteed a spot in a BCS bowl game (more than likely the Fiesta Bowl), Oklahoma will more than likely be in the national championship (with a win over Missouri this weekend), and Texas Tech, the number 7 ranked team in the nation, is left holding the clipboard with me on the sideline.  They will more than likely play Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl or someone else in the Holiday Bowl.  Sorry Red Raider fans, you are having the best season in school history and Graham Harrell, Michael Crabtree, and quite possibly Mike Leach will all be gone next year and this was your one shot at glory and you are going to end up in a toilet bowl (although the Cotton Bowl would be a great accomplishment for your school).  I guess you guys should get some fans that are willing to travel and stop playing those 1-AA schools in your non-conference regular season schedule.
  • This next point isn’t necessarily all the BCS and much more just the Big 12 in general.  Texas is going to end up watching the Big 12 championship game on TV at home featuring two teams they beat down on in Oklahoma and Missouri.  Its sad, but very true and you can be sure that this rule will be changed by next season.  You will never see this problem again.  Too bad Texas got screwed.
  • Boise State (12-0) vs. Ohio State (10-2) who do you go with?  Most would say Ohio State because of the fans, but can you really tell me that you expect Ohio State to do better than Boise in a bowl game?  Boise State beat Oregon on the road at the beginning of the season and have not lost since.  I hate to say it but I think Boise is going to have to sit this one out as much as I would love to see them against Utah or USC or something.

The BCS Standings Looking like this (Top 10)

  3. Texas
  4. Florida
  5. USC
  6. Utah

Fan gets some at UTEP game!

In my past, I have done some pretty crazy stuff in the weirdest places, but one place I never messed around at was national television.  You know how big of a football fan I am so I was flipping through my football channels and I came up on the UTEP game and they were playing Texas at UTEP at this beginning of the season…Anyways their stadium is cool because its built into a couple of small mountains and they were panning around the mountain and all the sudden I saw this chick and dude making out which caught by eye.  Well I guess it caught the announcers eye too because they started zooming in…and well…I guess I will just let you see for yourself…

Texas Tech weakest #2 since 2006

November 4, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Texas Tech fans are in uproar because they were not voted #1 this week after beating the #1 team in the land.  We all remember ealier this season when Texas jumped from #5 to #1 after beating Oklahoma.  I would like to remind them that this is actually a larger leap than that.  Plus, I am still not convinced that Texas Tech can get it done against Oklahoma State and Oklahoma two games in a row (even if one of them is a home game).  I dont think they deserve the #2 spot ahead of Penn State after barely beating Texas.  I think they need to prove themselves against OU and OK State before they get my total respect.  They get through the next two games unscathed, then they will get my respect.  For now I think they are the weakest #2 since Notre Dame had it back in Week 2 of the 2006 season (they ended up 17th after getting wallyflopped by LSU in the Sugar Bowl).  Here are the highlights:

What have you done for me lately?

November 3, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Phillip Fulmer and the athletic directors at the University of Tennessee have planned a press conference for today and reports have it that he will not be returning after this season.  This comes at no surprise to me only because I realize that all coaches are on the ropes if they aren’t getting to bowl games.  Its a “show me what you have done for me lately” kind of world out there folks.  This year has been especially bad considering it will more than likely be a second losing season in 4 years.  Its obvious to me that Tennessee has had a problem with a lack of recruiting.  I have no problem with this move because the press has been questioning how long he will be in office after all the losses this year.  When I think about it, they won 10 games last season and actually went to the SEC championship…so the question I have for you is this:  Is it ridiculous to fire a coach (or have him step down as in this case) for a losing season after a season of double digit wins?  This season however the lack of recruiting has really hurt them.  They are ranked 114th in both points per game (17.0) and Total Yards Per Game (272.4yds).  They are the joke of the SEC.  My only question is why this was not done back in 2005 when they went 5-6 and had a ton of arrests on the team.  Oh well, I guess they just wanted to try to give him a couple of years or something.  After the loss to South Carolina Fulmer stop getting a regular paycheck and will now get 6 million over 2 years.

Lets look forward to the future.  Who do we have that fit into an SEC power hungry school like Tennessee?  I can tell you would I would put at the top of my list.  Two words, Will Muschamp…thats right, the recently pwned University of Texas defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.  He was a finalist for the Broyles Award last season.  He has played in the SEC with Auburn and LSU.  I am hoping he will say no and stay another year with Mack Brown and Colt Mccoy.  Another guy I look to is Lane Kiffin who is the recently fired Oakland Raiders head coach.  His resume consists of Fresno State (Quarterbacks Coach), Colorado State (offensive line coach), USC (Tight Ends Coach, Offensive Line Coach, and Offensive Coordinator), and finally with the Oakland Raiders Head Coach from 2007-2008.  This guy has done it all, and is an offensive oriented guy who could probably do some good at Tennessee plus he might have some pull with some California JUCO and high school football players.  Those two are by far the front runners in my book but some others to look at are Boise State’s head coach Chris Peterson, Cincinatti’s coach Brian Kelly, and Mike Leach of Texas Tech (whoa…yes I just wrote that…that dude will listen to anyone).

Jump on the Texas band wagon! Next stop…Oklahoma State!

I dont think anyone was expecting the pounding that Missouri took today.  I ordered pizza at 7-0 and by the time it got there (30 min later) it was already 35-0 Texas.  College football fans are leaving their teams all across America to join the Texas Bandwagon group.  I would like you to know that they are not currently accepting BYU fans, it just wouldnt be right.  Colt Mccoy went 29-32 (better than 90%) passing.  For all of you who said their defense was overrated, I hope you were watching the game, because they only allowed 3 points in the first half against a team who is always scoring.  The game tonight never materialized with Mccoy at the reigns.  He just took over the first half and by halftime we were wondering if they were going to invent some mercy rule.  They really should after seeing some of the games this weekend.  Tulsa put up 77 tonight against UTEP which is 25 more than Texas was able to score.  They also put more up than Texas against Rice putting 63 points on them.  The only question I see with Tulsa is their schedule strength.  They could run the table which would be very interesting to see how far they make it up the poll.  So far they havent even reached Top 25 status although I am pretty sure that all changes this week.  How do you argue with stats like these:

Completions: 29
Attempts: 32
Yards: 337
Completion Percentage: 90.6 %
Longest: 38
Touchdowns: 2
Interceptions: 0
Passer Rating: 199.71
Rushing Attempts: 11
Rushing Yards: 23
Average: 2.1
Longest: 9
Touchdowns: 2

All of this against the #11 team in the nation who was, until last week, considered to be the best of the Big 12 and the country.  I can only imagine what it would have been like if Missouri had won last week.  I am however, glad that they were able to get two solid wins against two major teams in a row.  I am interested in seeing what the injuries are after this game, because I kept noticing Longhorn players heading over to the sideline.  I hope to see you next week when the Longhorns take on the #8 team in the nation in Oklahoma State (the team that took out Missouri last week).

Thank You TCU, May I Have Another?

TCU derails BYU
For BYU to be ranked even close to #9 has pissed me off to no end for the past couple of weeks.  I am tired of Mountain West teams getting the benefit of the doubt.  I feel bad because I feel as if I am talking about TCU also since they are in the Mountain West also but I have all the respect in the world for them.  Yes, TCU plays #2 Oklahoma, #9 BYU, and so far #14 Utah but I actually imagine Utah moving into the top 10 by the time they get to TCU.  I am very excited to see that game, and hope that it could move TCU into position for a possible BCS game.  I would be alright with that, or at least a good bowl game that makes them money (god knows they need it after their tuition…NOT!).  Anyways, they only allowed 35 from Oklahoma and that was their worse game (which by the way is how much Texas allowed from Oklahoma).  Again, thank you TCU for proving the point I have been trying to make this entire season which is that BYU is overrated, maybe even more overrated thank Kansas at this point.  You have no BCS hopes anymore BYU, its possible that TCU might at this point.  I think they might have actually lost early enough to at least be considered.  The problem is that if TCU wins out and runs the table, their two key wins will come from Non-BCS teams being from a Non-BCS conference.  It will be interesting to see how all of this pans out and you can be sure that I will be pushing hardcore for TCU in the coming weeks.  What makes me mad is BYU is able to jack up every one of their players stats by not playing anyone.  Max Hall has already thrown for more yards than Colt Mccoy, Chase Daniel, Sam Bradford, and even Graham Harrell.  His QB rating is not half bad either.  Don’t get me wrong, I think he has a great chance to play in the NFL.  The dude is 6-1, 200lbs which is great, but I just dont want him getting drafted ahead of other Quarterbacks who deserve a chance.  What is funny about this entire thing is this was BYU’s toughest opponent of the year so far and Max couldnt even muster up a passing touchdown.

Bevo takes care of a Sooner!

Bevo takes care of a Sooner!

I hate to admit it, but I feel as if Texas has no chance this weekend after hearing some of the things I have read and heard on the radio.  Its like no one has respect for what Texas has done this year.  I am tired of hearing that Texas is flying under the radar this season and “they think they are going to sneak up on Oklahoma.”  Texas football is what it is…Texas Football.  What I mean is Texas is never going to sneak up on anyone in any conference.  Even the SEC fans are giving Texas a little respect this season after the put a whoopin on Arkansas.  Mike Goodman, an Oklahoma sports writer of all papers, puts it perfectly when he says, “Texas has somewhat flown under the radar this season, but when you’re Texas and you’re undefeated, it doesn’t take long to get back in the spotlight. McCoy, the nation’s fourth-rated passer, has completed 103 of 130 passes for 1,280 yards and 16 TDs. He’s also rushed for 317 yards on only 45 carries, with four TDs.”  Texas, whether they have flown under the radar or not this season, is obviously back in the spotlight and is not going to ruin this chance to move to the top of the pack.  Mack Brown does not want to lose his job, and I think fear of letting everyone down will actually cause him to be on top of his game.  I just did a poll on ESPN and everything points towards Oklahoma winning this game hands down.  Are the Longhorns going to lose?  That was the closest poll…with 59% of the nation thinking that Texas is going to lose this weekend.  It just makes no sense to me, I think Texas is the better team.  I would give talent to Oklahoma more than likely but I think Colt Mccoy will be ready for this game and as long as he is there to give confidence, Texas will have no problem with Oklahoma.

I said a few weeks ago that Texas would be undefeated when they got to Oklahoma, and I will say this again.  Oklahoma is not going to be able to just manhandle the Texas defense.  I think that this is how it lays out.  Oklahoma has a better offense, and Texas has a better defense, but I think that Texas’ defense is better than Oklahoma’s offense.  Yes, thats how good I think they are, I think the youngins in the back field are up to the challenge they have coming up this weekend.  My take is Texas by 5 points…under 47.

Texas Will be undefeated by the time they get to Oklahoma.

You heard it here first.  I am telling you right now that the Texas Longhorns are going to blow through the Arkansas game (I dont care how bad you think it is to just breeze through a game especially against the SEC) and will have a hard fought nose to nose battle with the Buffaloes of Colorado.  Texas is coming off a 52-10 victory against Rice while Arkansas got embarrased by Alabama.  I have been talking to quite a few people who have been quite adamant about Arkansas putting it to Texas, but I am here to tell you right now, that I will shut my blog down if Texas loses to Arkansas, because if Texas loses, then Hell must be freezing over and I need to get on the first Google space craft out of here.

The real question here is whether or not Cody Johnson is the man behind Colt Mccoy.  Will he be lining up in the Running Back position or will one of the other numerous running back choices come in?  I will be the last person to tell you that Texas has a great running back situation because they dont.  I would love to see them have a guy who ran for 200 plus yards a game, but they do have depth.   Colt Mccoy is the leading rusher at 194 yards and averaging about 8 yards a carry.   Cody Johnson, Vondrell McGee, and Foswhitt Whittaker will surely be sleeping a lot less before game day as Mack Brown has stated that its going to be a game time decision.   When it comes to the SEC and Big 12 I only have one solid answer for you…

Can East Carolina play with the big boys?

September 20, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

I am sitting here watching East Carolina run with North Carolina State but its more of a back and forth style game and I am wondering if they could deserve a BCS bid.  Don’t get me wrong guys, you look amazing.  I actually expected you guys to do well and you know that, but can you get it done with the USC’s, UT’s, Oklahoma or Georgia’s?  I mean Ohio State got the butts handed to them by USC so what makes you think you can hang with the big boys?  I just watched you go 4 downs on the 1 yard line against the North Carolina State defense?   I dont know guys, you are starting to scare me, I had you picked to lose 1 game this season and I was hoping it would be Virginia.  Your defense will hold out though, anyways I hope you guys are prepared to play with the big boys and if you go undefeated will BYU beat you out?  I feel bad for you guys if they do.
