North Dakota State upsets Sam Houston State in National Championship 17-6

Just down the road from the Cowboys Stadium in good old Frisco, Texas, Sam Houston State was almost sure to win the Division II National Championship having averaged nearly 40 points per game the entire season.  I mean they hung 66 on Lamar University, 49 on Montana State, and 48 on FBS school New Mexico (that is Division 1).  That is impressive no matter how you look at things.  However, they scored 33 points less than their average and ended up losing the game 17-6.  They literally only scored 6 points total.  Sam Houston State endured one of the roughest schedules of any team at their level.  They played a lot of Top 25 teams along with some FBS level schools.   All in all, it was a very disappointing end to an excting year for Sam Houston State fans.  And for those fans who made the trek to Frisco, Tx I really do feel bad for you because I know you wanted at least something exciting.  If you had been watching all the bowl games that have been on I have a feeling that you would really be shocked at how this game ended.

Montana Loses Opener to Tennessee

We all knew that Montana was going to lose but I do not think anyone expected them to get beaten down so badly.  It was 28-0 before Montana managed to even get on the board right before halftime.  Tyler Bray was a madman to start off the game with three straight passing touchdowns one going for over 80 yards.  Tyler ended up with almost 300 yards passing by the end of the day with three touchdowns.  Tennessee’s duo of running backs Freshman Marlin Lane and Senior Tauren Poole each ended up with rushing touchdowns.  The game itself, while pitiful, was also a great learning experience for the Grizz.  I feel as if they have hit the ground running in their first game of the season.  Lets face it, they arent going to have the same quality players, and they did end up scoring points on a great school like Tennessee.  Montana’s defense ended up with a safety at the beginning of the second half which I thought was great for them.  I look for them to have a decent season this year having at least 8 wins which should propel them into the playoffs.  They ended up losing the game against Tennessee 42-16.

UTSA Football Season Officially Open!

The UTSA Roadrunners will be playing their first football game in school history.  For the first time their students will be able to have a big sport to cheer for and a great place to go for them.  They will be playing all of their home games at the Alamodome (also where the Alamobowl is played and has seats for up to 70,000+ people).  Former Miami Hurricane Head Coach Larry Coker will be coaching the team and we should expect some pretty interesting things as their first season of football gets underway.  We can hope for at least a .500 record as they will be moving up to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) as of 2012.  Playing in the FCS (Division 1-AA) should not be all that hard or we might be looking at a program that could take a while to get off the ground.  They may be able to get some of the best players in the San Antonio area but unless they are winning most of their games, I find it hard to believe that players from outside the city, much less the state will be dying to get in there.

Richmond Blows Montana out for National Championship!

December 20, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

I hope you were watching the FCS National Championship instead of flipping back and forth from that to the Lakers game.  I swear I was watching the game and it was tied 0-0 and I change it to the Lakers game and watch 9 minutes of the game and change it back…but this time its 14-0 Richmond.  I changed it back and forth until I finally decided to watch the Lakers for a while.  I change it back and its half time…21-0 Richmond.  Jesus, can Montana start out any worse than they had??? Well considering Richmond is 21-1 when leading at halftime, I knew it was going to be hard for the Grizz to get back into the game.  Sure enough, it was a pretty rough second half and the final score…Richmond 24 Montana 7.  Montana played some hard nosed defense in the second half only allowing 3 points, but the Grizz just couldn’t get it going on the offensive side of the ball.  When it comes down to it, the problem the Montana Grizz had for most of the game were the turnovers.  2 turnovers will kill you when the other team isn’t coughing up the ball.  I cannot wait to see Eric Ward at the next level.  He is the perfect player for the Wildhog offense.  He reminds me of a Michael Vick but without the dog fighting.  Look for him to go pretty high in the draft.  Possibly even a first dayer.  He had 165 all purpose yards including throwing a touchdown pass, catching a touchdown pass, and rushing for almost 50 yards.  Bergquist was great between the 20′s but coughed the football up with one interception but had over 250 yards passing on the night.  Richmond also had 7 sacks on the night which still has Bergquist shaking in his little space booties.

2008 Division 1-AA Playoff Bracket (Updated for Championship)

Division 1-AA playoffs are here and boy do I have a treat for you.  I have photoshopped a bracket for you.  Check it out and tell me what you think and who you think is going to win!  Here is your 2008 Division 1-AA Playoff Bracket.  It looks to be a great match-up in the championship as I believe Montana will probably win the national championship.  James Madison tried to come back in the 4th quarter against Montana but just didnt have enough in them to finish the game.  They couldnt convert on a final 4th down.  One of the highlights of the game was JMU’s quarterback going airborn on 4th down to get into the endzone.  They are crazy up there at James Madison.  The problem that Montana has is Richmond can easily come back and win the game.  They were able to score 14 points in the 4th quarter to beat a better Northern Iowa squad.  I thought for sure the game was over after the huge 17 point 3rd quarter that Northern Iowa had.  Richmond is the real deal though.  Its going to be interesting to see how that whole situation turns out.
