I would like to tell you all that I went to the Division 1 4A State Championship at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Tx yesterday. It was a great game that started out a little slower that I guess I would have expected, but ended up being one of the greatest football games I have ever seen. It may not have been all football that caught my eye though. The Longview band gave me a few laughs during halftime. Lake Travis players came out after halftime with about 7 minutes left in the halftime show. This was at the same time the Longview band was on the field performing their halftime show. Well some of the Lake Travis players decided that it would be funny to start walking onto the field while the rest of the team waited patiently in the endzone. The whole crowd erupted with boo’s and cursing and with one whistle (by the Drum Major) the entire band did a 180 and started heading towards the Lake Travis players. They pushed the team off the field twice which caused the crowd to go nuts. I have to admit this is probably the greatest high school football game that I have ever been to in my entire life. The atmosphere was electrifying. I was sitting on the Longview side (worried about being seen by my arch rivals). The whole reason I went to game in the first place, however, was to was Garrett Gilbert play only because I wont be able to see him play until his red-shirted freshman year (year after next). He was everything I expected plus more. He ended up helping the team crush Longview 48-23. Fans were leaving at the beginning of the 4th quarter.

Depending on who you talk to and where you look, you will see Stony Point High School in Round Rock is ranked higher (6th in the State of Texas) than Lake Travis High School (ranked 7th). This makes absolutely no sense to me only because Stony Point has lost 2 games this season and Lake Travis is currently undefeated playing in the Texas 4A State Championship. Stony Point can only go down from here though I would think. They are out of the playoffs already and their season is through. I am seriously contemplating going to the Lake Travis game tomorrow. I havent figured out if thats what I want to do yet or not. I will more than likely be going to the game though even though it means missing the Division 3 National Championship and the Montana game. I am doing this only because I really want to see Garrett Gilbert play. If he ever reads this, I hope he realizes that he has a huge fan in SideLineBlog. We do sports the right way, and I want to officially make this statement, “Sidelineblog.com believes that Lake Travis High School should be ranked #1 in the nation.” This is true because they have not lost this season, outside of the first game of the season, their closest game has been 15 points. They beat Killeen on a neutral field 71-9 in the Area playoffs. I don’t think they are playing around.

With a 42-3 victory over 9-1 Dripping Springs, a 54-14 win over Marble Falls, Lake Travis was the leading District 25 4A team going into playoffs. They started out this past week where they left off in the regular season beating Johnson High School (Austin, Tx) 55-14. They look good in the Division 1 bracket but I can only thank god that Dripping Springs will more than likely never have to face them. Dripping Springs’ stiffest competition will come this weekend with Kerrville Tivy. The Tivy Antlers, a lot like the Lake Travis Caviliers has been up against multiple 5A schools this season as they are expecting to move up at some point. I think the Tivy – Drip game will decide most of their bracket whereas Lake Travis has a pretty rough schedule ahead of them.

The score after the first quarter was 3-0 Dripping Springs. You have never seen a happier boy than I was at that moment. Here I was having predicted my favorite teams to win this weekend in big games: Texas at Texas Tech, Dripping Springs at Lake Travis and the Dallas Cowboys at the New York Giants. Then the second quarter rolled around. By halftime I knew it was over and the final score was 42-3 so you tell me. I thought Mitch Lawson would bring the thunder but he only had a few big hits and its apparent that he cant win the game for Dripping Springs by himself. Jeff Tuck and Jacob Moore have got to light it up if they are going to have any chance in the playoffs. Yes boys and girls…your Dripping Springs Tigers are going to the playoffs!!! This is probably the most exciting thing since chocolate. My man Garrett Gilbert looked as good as I thought he would in the game thank goodness. That was the only great thing I got out of that game is the future lifetime longhorn Garrett Gilbert looked good.

The Dripping Springs Tigers are having the football season of their lives right now. They have found themselves 9-0 for the first time since I can remember. Actually they are looking to go undefeated in the regular season for the first time in their schools history. They are ranked 5th in Reigon IV play with the last game of the season possibly deciding whether or not they go ranked #1 into the playoffs. I was worried about their game with Hendrickson only because of the way the Tigers have always managed to choke when its most important, but they came through going 9-0 going into the dreaded Lake Travis game. I can only imagine what its like at school right now, and how crazy people are getting at school right now and how crazy the Burn LT bonfire is going to be. I only hope that Mitch Lawson and his crew show up on Friday because they are going to need to bring it. They are taking on Texas commit Garrett Gilbert who has already made every other quarterback in Texas look laughable. Its very unusual to see a team score more and more points each week but that’s exactly what Lake Travis has done all season:

(W) 27-20 Westwood
(W) 38-17 Westlake
(W) 35-21 Cedar Park
(W) 46-31 Evangel Christian (LA)
(W) 50-9 Killeen
(W) 55-20 Hutto
(W) 57-0 Hendrickson

Now, I have a really good feeling that this trend is going to change this weekend, but I am worried that the Tigers might not have what it takes offensively to move the ball against this stellar defense. The key for Dripping is going to be whether or not the defense can handle this spread formation that Lake Travis uses to put over 300 yards per game on teams. Lake Travis averages 17.1 yards per game rushing so I am not too worried about their running backs, but it just goes to show you how good their throwing game is. Teams go into it knowing they are going to throw, and still lose. Anyways, I will more than likely be at the game not to cheer Dripping Springs on really, but to see Garrett Gilbert play against what looks to be the roughest game of their schedule. Dripping Springs has had the following this season:

(W) 40-14 Gonzales (Gonzales, Tx)
(W) 35-28 Wimberley (Wimberley, Tx)
(W) 20-13 McCallum (Austin, Tx)
(W) 42-6 Travis (Austin, Tx)
(W) 27-26 Marble Falls (Marble Falls, Tx)
(W) 24-17 Killeen (Killeen, Tx)
(W) 17-7 Hutto (Hutto, Tx)
(W) 35-14 Lampasas (Lampasas, Tx)
(W) 28-14 Hendrickson (Pflugerville, Tx)

A lot of people have been questioning when I am going to have a top 25 for High School football. Now as hard as it was to research this, and believe me it was hard…I have put together what I feel are the top high school football teams in the nation:

Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL)

Byrnes (Duncan, SC)

Centennial (Corona, CA)

Poly (Long Beach, CA)

Madison County (Madison, FL)

Trinity (Euless, TX)

Wayne County (Waynesboro, MS)

Phoebus (Hampton, VA)

Armwood (Seffner, FL)

South Pointe (Rock Hill, SC)

Camden County (Kingsland, GA)

St. Bonaventure (Ventura, CA)

Destrehan (Destrehan, LA)

Elder (Cincinnati, OH)

Skyline (Sammamish, WA)

Trinity (Louisville, KY)

St. Xavier (Louisville, KY)

Bastrop (Bastrop, LA)

Longview (Longview, TX)

Colerain (Cincinnati, OH)

Dorman (Roebuck, SC)

Lake Travis (Lakeway, TX)

Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, CA)

Coldwater (Coldwater, OH)

Wheaton-Warrenville South (Wheaton, IL)

Personally I feel that there should be more Texas teams, but looking at last years graduates and this years…I have a feeling that Florida will be putting out some monster seniors.

My alma mater is doing well this year (which is great because they were never that good when I was attending the school) and have started their season 4-0 with wins over Gonzales High School, Wimberley High School, McCallum High School, and Travis High School. With the start of district play this week, coach Bob Schultz has to be happy with the way things have started. Only winning 3 games last year, the Tigers have already exceeded expectations although having Lake Travis in their district makes me wonder if they will even get into the playoffs. Almost 70 percent of last year’s varsity team returns this season which makes me wonder how they are able to do so well. The defensive unit is headed by the linebackers as Scott Fyall, Mitch Lawson, and Spencer Wood are probably the biggest playmakers on the team holding Travis High School to only 6 points just this past weekend. I believe improvement is possible if the defense can muster up the strength to keep Lake Travis under 30 points. I plan to make it out to a few games whenever I get a chance to see these guys in action. You can see them in Dripping Springs on the 26th of September (or Friday) at 7:30PM as they will be taking on the Marble Falls Mustangs who are currently 3-1 (2-1 away). This should be an interesting game considering their quarterback Thor Woerner combined to pass and run for 2,000 yards last season with 22 touchdowns. He likes to run and he will more than likely get plenty of chances with the Dripping Springs “blitz all day and night” defense. The Mustangs are coming off of a shutout win over Reagan last week.
